The World is Small – October 2016

The World is Small

This week we are attempting a Wick Antiques first – loading two containers on the same day. One is going half way around the world to ‘Wallrocks’ in Brisbane, Australia and the other in the opposite direction to Miami.

The reason for this extravagance is our latest collaboration with the Palm Beach Show Group. Every year, as you know, we exhibit at Palm Beach, and sometimes New York, and then we leave many pieces in storage in the States. PBSG have struck on the brilliant idea that, rather than so many foreign and upstate dealers leaving their stock languishing in containers for months, they will offer us a permanent showroom attracting decorators and collectors alike for the remaining months of the year. Inspired! Items being sent over include a very decorative pair Chippendale revival giltwood phoenix mirrors and a bronze whippet by Waagen.

Meanwhile, the news nearer home is that we had a very good LAPADA Fair selling amongst other things this enchanting 18th century genre portrait of a boy with a hoop, and absolutely enormous eyes, and a very unusual Gothic clock with bronze rather than ebony mounts. New purchases include a fine pair of Japanese lacquer helmet boxes which make chic and dramatic containers and two very different pietra dura tables. Both date from the very early years of Victoria’s reign and both have Italian marble tops but the rectangular table has a 17th century panel within a specimen marble border while the circular table has an ornate giltwood base by Gillows.
