August 2020 – ‘Summertime, and the living is easy’

20th July 2020

Although many of us will not be going on holiday abroad this year the summer months of July and August can still be enjoyed at home.  Sailing on the Solent is back in full swing with the addition of hordes of kite-surfers and paddle-boarders – the latest craze.  Above is a more typical yachting picture by Montague Dawson of ‘Cohoe’.  Adlard Coles entered her in the 1950 Transatlantic Race Atlantic, and won.  He went on to establish a maritime/nautical publishing house, writing many of the books himself.  His runaway best seller was ‘Rough Weather Sailing’ which may or may not be a metaphor for our times.
