This truly outstanding large lady’s coromandel dressing case is inlaid with profusely incised silver-gilt corners and ‘straps’. It opens to reveal a blue velvet interior with cut glass bottles and boxes behind openwork trefoil galleries, on two hinged trays which swing out to expose a further pair of trays fitted with manicure and toilette accessories.
These, in turn, have hidden jewellery drawers below and open to allow access to a set of ivory-backed brushes beneath. The fall front has three hand-held mirrors protected in a velvet pad while an easel mirror is fitted into the lid. The unusual elements in this box are the clock and the barometer in horseshoe frames, the tassel-shaped ivory note pad and matching thermometer and the tape measure inside a gilt acorn. The entire ensemble is incised with a monogram S.B.W. and roses on a ground of tightly curled fern fronds. The London assay stamps range from 1874-84.
