We have an extensive collection of breath-taking travelling boxes. Provenance ranging from European Royalty to well recognised family names such as Spencer Churchill and Ogilvy. These items are not available for viewing on our website, so if you are interested please contact us for details.
This truly outstanding large lady’s coromandel dressing case is inlaid with profusely incised silver-gilt corners and ‘straps’. It opens to reveal a blue velvet interior with cut glass bottles and boxes behind openwork trefoil galleries, on two hinged trays which swing out to expose a further pair of trays fitted with manicure and toilette accessories.
These, in turn, have hidden jewellery drawers below and open to allow access to a set of ivory-backed brushes beneath. The fall front has three hand-held mirrors protected in a velvet pad while an easel mirror is fitted into the lid. The unusual elements in this box are the clock and the barometer in horseshoe frames, the tassel-shaped ivory note pad and matching thermometer and the tape measure inside a gilt acorn. The entire ensemble is incised with a monogram S.B.W. and roses on a ground of tightly curled fern fronds. The London assay stamps range from 1874-84.
