A bronze model of Sir Francis Drake, by Herbert H Cawood, dated 1944, portrayed standing, dressed in Elizabethan doublet and hose with high boots, his right hand holding a scroll and his left gripping the sword at his side, the rectangular base inscribed SIR FRANCIS DRAKE 1545 – 1595, and signed in the maquette. (Sword handle replaced). English.
Footnote: Herbert Harry Cawood (1890-1957) was an English sculptor and silversmith. He was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire and began working as a silversmith whilst still an art student. He was in the Machine Gun Corps during WW1. He exhibited at Leeds City Art Gallery, 1928 and the Royal Academy of Arts, London, (Summer Exhibition) 1920 – 1923. He was an associate member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1943, a Fellow from 1946 -1952.
