A charming Victorian tortoiseshell and silver piqué work etui, of shaped rectangular form with cut corners at the back and a hinged cover, inlaid with foliate branches bearing flowers and grapes, initials on the cover, with a small silver plaque incised with initials on the cover, the red velvet and silk lined interior fitted with a notecard, needle case, silver thimble, propelling pencil, bodkin and a small enamel pot inscribed ‘Trifles these respect’. English, circa 1860.
Piqué work is identified by the presence of metals, usually gold and silver, set into materials such as tortoiseshell or ivory. An CITES licence will be supplied for any item being exported from the UK.
