A French (Dieppe) carved ivory and steel sword,
third quarter 19th century, the blade engraved at the hilt end with a stag and arabesques, the cross-guard carved as twin adorsed dolphins, beneath a velvet wrapped and studded baluster hilt, the pommel with foliate carved finial above cabochon carved cylinder; the scabbard front profusely carved in relief with a crown, an armorial, a winged female herm, a profile bust of Francis I and a Bacchic mask, all within scrolling foliate carved borders, the scabbard reverse with velvet covering.
