Literature: In ‘Gillows of Lancaster and London’, pp 224-226, Susan Stewart devotes a whole section to ‘Rococo Revival seat furniture c1813-40. She describes the magnificent gilded suites for the Red Drawing Room, Tatton Park, Cheshire and the Whistlejacket Room, Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire as ‘these extravagant neo-baroque or neo-rococo pieces are quite unlike most furniture drawn or ascribed to the Lancaster firm’. However a firm attributed can be made thanks to an invoice paid by Lord Fitzwilliam in 1833. the present chairs are evidently made from the same drawings but the expense and quality of the show-wood indicates that they would not have been gilded.
