A powerful Japanese equestrian wood carving of a samurai by Yoshida Issen/Isshun, depicted in full armour on a prancing, muscular war horse, signed 一雋刀” ISSEN TO”. Japanese, circa 1920.
Footnote: Yoshida Issen (1885-1956) was from a family of wood carvers who specialized in Buddhist sculpture and architectural items. The family is based in Nanao City, Noto region, Ishikawa Prefecture. Other examples of his works can be found at the Nanao City (Ishikawa) municipal museum.
