A very fine pair of ‘Black Forest’ walnut game plaques, each of shaped oval form, one with a creel and net holding a fisherman’s catch of crab, lobster, round fish and skate, all suspended from the mouth of a stylised sealion, the other with a hunter’s bag of duck and snipe hanging from the mouth of a hunting dog.  Swiss, circa 1880.

According to Arenski, Daniels and Daniels, Swiss Carvings ‘The Art of the Black Forest’, 1820-1940, London 2004, pages 44, the predominant carver of game plaques was Johann Flück of Brienz and there are numerous examples of his work on pages 86-87.
