The glazed upper section with two doors and adjustable shelves above a fitted secretaire drawer and cube trellis cupboard doors.  decorated throughout with contrasting counter veneers and lavish ormolu borders to the cornice, edges and panelled sides. French, circa 1850.

Despite being French this bookcase is featured in R W Symonds & B B Whinery Victorian Furniture’ pp 150-1.  The authors note that “‘a piece of this quality would have been made only by one of the leading makers and its cost would have been considerable”.
