A Fine Bronze Sculpture by Luis Domenech y Vicente, c.1904 After the Model He Exhibited at the Salon Des Beaux Arts in Paris That Year
Luis Domenech y Vicente, Le Messager de Paix, bronze sculpture, signed lower base, foundry mark/stamp ‘European Bronze Finery’ lower base, mounted on black marble base.
The artist exhibited his original at the Salon Des Beaux Arts in 1904 and was awarded an honourable mention as a result. The sculpture clearly caught the eye of the audiences of the time and several founders produced reductions in bronze as a result. This is a highly evocative image of the belle epoque period-a time of unprecedented peace in Europe.
This model is discussed in detail by Harold Berman in his Bronzes, Sculptors and Founders: 1800-1930, v. I on page 170. A bronze of this subject is illustrated in plate 723.
Luis Domenech y Vicente
Born in Spain in 1873, he studied with Manuel Fuxa in Barcelona before moving to Paris, the centre of the contemporary art world during this period, to further his career. He was one of a number of highly talented and successful Spanish artists working in Paris during this period, nearly all of whom had studied with Fuxa.
Domenech y Vicente died young in 1920 but had done more than enough in his brief life to ensure that his artistic legacy would remain. His works are striking and original examples of their kind.
