A Cossack rider by du Passage. This fine bronze sculpture shows a mounted Cossack shading his eyes as he turns to scan the horizon. He is riding a horse with a fur saddle cloth and his legs resting on two enormous saddle bags. French, circa 1890. Signed ‘A du Passage’

Arthur Marie Gabriel, Comte du Passage, (1838-1909) initially pursued a military career to please his family but his natural talent for sculpture could not be repressed. He eventually studied under Barye and Mêne, both renowned for their skill in the field of animalier bronzes, and became proficient enough in this field to exhibit in the Paris Salon from 1865 until 1893.
