Arthur Marie Gabriel, Comte du Passage, (1838-1909) initially pursued a military career to please his family but his natural talent for sculpture could not be repressed. He eventually studied under Barye and Mêne, both renowned for their skill in the field of animalier bronzes, and became proficient enough in this field to exhibit in the Paris Salon from 1865 until 1893.
