A pair of exhibition quality Meiji period bronze vases each of baluster form with stylized ho-ho bird handles, decorated throughout with large high-relief carp swimming amongst swirling silver ripples and tufts of gilt water weed, the carp with gilt and shakudo eyes, the neck with raised lappets and scrolling borders, set on a separate base modelled as a ring of simulated bamboo leaves and stems held in a palisade of wooden stumps raising the vase above the eddying stream, highlighted in gilt with further gilt water weed and silver bubbles, Japanese, circa 1880.
