The ovoid body naively painted with fish, shells, octopus and sea horses in an underwater seascape, stamped ‘Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach, Made in France-Saar Economic Union’ and inscribed in black ‘Handgemalt’
Provenance: Footnote: François Boch set up a pottery company with his three sons in 1748 at Septfontaines, Luxembourg, producing ceramics and by 1812 Jean-François Boch began construction of kilns in Mettlach, Saarland near to the faience company of Nicolas Villeroy . The two companies merged in 1836 and have been producing tableware, tiles for the building trade and fine plumbing fixtures ever since.
