A superb Meiji period shibayama kodansu (casket), of typical rectangular form with a carrying handle and a door opening to reveal three drawers, each of the four sides and the top decorated with an ivory panel inlaid with coloured mother-of-pearl, coral, tortoiseshell, fruitwood and coconut, within a silver frame of flowers against trellis and swirls of water, the panels on the sides variously depicting sparrows, song birds, quail and a hawk amongst stands of flowers and foliage, the top with an elaborate floral arrangement in a basket, the interior with maple leaves on a nashiji ground and a gourd plant on a black ground. Japanese, circa 1880.
