Bookcases come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from floor-standing to wall mounted, from huge library bookcases to small revolving shelves for the drawing room. Charlie, here at Wick Antiques, loves large four door bookcases which would take up the whole wall of a library or gentleman’s study. Typically these have glazed upper sections enclosing shelves for the books with cupboards below. The more colour and depth to the quarter or book veneers on these cupboard doors the better. Smaller drawing room bookcases from the Georgian and Victorian periods were usually limited to two doors with glass or mirrored doors above, the later would reflect the candle light from the integral candle arms. The lower sections of a drawing room bookcase would probably have graduated drawers and, in the case of a secretaire bookcase, a fall front writing surface which conceals an arrangement of pigeon holes and small drawers.
