Craftsmen saw cabinets as pieces of show furniture which would be highly decorative and ornate, often disguising their true usefulness. For this reason cabinetmaking is the pinnacle of the furniture maker’s craft. Display pieces like the Meiji pagoda with four glazed doors in a revolving upper section would have been made for an exhibition.
