At Wick Antiques we stock a large number of antique writing desks, predominantly twin pedestal desks. They often have a long central drawer above the kneehole and a series of smaller drawers or cupboards on either side. Partner’s desks in which drawers are fitted to both ‘back’ and front’ are extremely popular as they can be free-standing in a library or gentleman’s study. However, for more confined spaces, for example in a London apartment, the Davenport desk with its sideways drawers and compact shape is ideal. Ladies used to prefer writing tables with disguised drawers in the frieze and decorative cabriole legs for the drawing room or secretaire bookcases which would stand against the wall and all the writing paraphernalia could be neatly folded away when not in use.
