Quite often the first piece of antique furniture people buy is a dining table. Many of these have ingenious systems for shrinking and expanding to accommodate different numbers of diners. In stock we have twin pillar tables, telescopic extending tables and concertina tables. Smaller tables include a wide variety of circular tables from 5′ supper, breakfast and centre tables like our Gillows rosewood example to smaller wine, side and lamp tables. For the drawing room there are sofa tables and end tables, writing tables and bureaux plats. The French ones are usually made from kingwood with delicate cross-banding and ormolu mounts while English examples are often sturdier and made of darker woods such as mahogany and rosewood, relying on machine-turning and reeding for decoration.
