A late Victorian Hepplewhite painted satinwood two-seater settee, the double shield back and curved arms set upon square tapering front legs and outswept back legs, painted in polychrome with a central roses and floral garlands, reupholstered. English, circa 1900.

George Hepplewhite’s book ‘Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide’ was published posthumously by his widow, Alice, in 1788. She included about 300 of his designs including for his signature delicate shield back chairs similar to this settee. The original subtitle read ‘Repository of Designs for Every Article of Household Furniture, in the Newest and Most Approved Taste’.
