Description
An American reverse-glass painting of the ship ‘Hurricane’ of Boston, of rectangular form showing a three masted sailing ship flying the Stars and Stripes and signalling flags from her top mast, the distant shore painted with mountains and pagodas, inscribed in gilt ‘Ship Hurricane of Boston’, in a painted faux lacquer frame with a gilt slip. American, circa 1880.
Footnote: The Hurricane was a very famous US tea clipper, built in 1851, very fast, the holder of several records and likewise numerous ‘near record’ passages. After a very glamorous 10-year career under the ‘Stars & Stripes’, she was sold to British owners in 1860, renamed and thereafter traded out of Singapore for about 15 years.
